The Chinese food tray packaging market is expected to show a steady development trend in 2025. According to the latest industry statistics, the market size is expected to reach 7.25 billion yuan this year, an increase of 68.9% compared to 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of 11.1%, making it a sub category with prominent growth in the food packaging field. This growth is attributed to the rapid development of the food industry, the diversification of retail formats, and the increasing demand for food preservation and convenience among consumers. Among them, the three major fields of fresh food, pre packaged food, and baked goods contribute over 80% of the market demand.
From the perspective of segmented fields, the demand for fresh food has the highest proportion, reaching 42%. With the continuous penetration of community group buying and fresh food e-commerce, the proportion of online sales of fresh food is expected to exceed 35% by 2025, driving a year-on-year increase of 18.6% in sales of fresh food trays. This type of tray is often made of breathable and anti fog PET material, which can effectively extend the shelf life of fruits, vegetables, and meat, and reduce transportation losses. The prefabricated food industry has the most impressive growth rate, driven by the "lazy economy". By 2025, the scale of the prefabricated food industry is expected to exceed 500 billion yuan, and the demand for supporting food trays will increase by 23.8% year-on-year, mainly made of PP material trays that can be microwave heated, to meet consumers' demand for instant and ready to eat food. In the field of baked goods, transparent and aesthetically pleasing PET or PS material trays are preferred, with a year-on-year demand growth of 15.2% in 2025, helping to enhance the visual appeal of products and promote terminal sales.
In terms of regional markets, the East China region, with its dense food processing enterprises and mature retail system, accounts for 36.5% of the total national demand, with cities such as Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou becoming core consumer areas; South China follows closely behind, accounting for 27.3%, with strong demand for fresh e-commerce and chain baking brands in the Pearl River Delta region; The growth rate in the central and western regions has accelerated, with a year-on-year increase of 17.9% in demand by 2025. The development and consumption upgrading of the food industry in new first tier cities such as Chengdu, Wuhan, and Xi'an have injected new vitality into the market.
